This is the story of the Ivković family. Please read it below.
We met the Ivković family from Smederevska Palanka on September 4, 2025.
The family is made up of single mother Slavica (born 1975) and her two children, Mijat (born 2011) and Mija (born 2017).
Sadly, five years ago the family lost its greatest support. Miroslav, husband and father, was killed.
That is when their greatest struggle began – the struggle to survive.
Five months ago, Slavica suffered two strokes in a row. She is completely immobile. On top of everything she has been through, she is now fighting breast cancer that has metastasized.
The family currently has no income at all. Slavica worked serving meals at a preschool. Because the procedure for her disability pension is still ongoing, her benefit payments are delayed.
They live in a rented apartment. They sleep and eat on the floor because they can’t afford to buy a bed and a table.
Our conversation with Slavica today shook us deeply. She told us that the hardest thing for her is that her older son, a 14-year-old child, doesn’t have the strength to handle everything involved in caring for her. She is 100% disabled. The children take care of her, but they are still too small to lift their mother and help her into her wheelchair. She also told us that they often don’t have enough to eat.
